The London Foundling Hospital - Living, Working or Passing Through

Speaker: Dr Janette Bright As well as general histories of the London Foundling Hospital, most other research has either focused on the governors who ran it, or the women and children who used its services. It also plays a role in histories of illegitimacy and wet nursing. However, this presentation will look beyond these important topics, to the many other individuals who considered the institution their home, place of work, a place of entertainment or a place to provide goods and services. Using Hospital minutes, room inventories, wills, financial and baptismal records, newspapers and other publications we can identify some of the complex challenges the institution faced and follow some of the individuals often overlooked in other histories. Dr Janette Bright has researched the London Foundling Hospital since 2003, contributing to exhibitions, publications and research projects. She completed her PhD on the history of the Foundling Hospital in 2025 and continues to research and share its history.
