Study Visit: Goldwork

A study visit exploring highlights from our collection of goldwork including ecclesiastical samples and items from India, Persia and China. This study visit will give you the opportunity to examine up close some of our finest examples of goldwork and metal embroidery. We will look at samples of fine English ecclesiastical embroidery, elaborate domestic textiles and garments from Persia and India and precisely worked goldwork accessories from China. The session will be guided by the collection's Curator who will talk you through each set of objects and point out interesting details about them such as the different threads, techniques and styles. If you are interested in Goldwork this is a great chance to get to see some original historic pieces up close, learn more about them and meet other people who share your interest. On the Day Please make sure to arrive between 9:45am and10:00 am for a prompt 10am start. One of our team will meet you at Reception, in the building just next to Brierfield Railway Station, and will direct you through to our Studio where the workshop will take place. Please note that the reception will only be staffed from 9:45 onwards, so if you arrive before this you will not be able to enter early. If you arrive early there is an onsite coffee shop where you may wish to relax and purchase refreshments. Refreshments A selection of hot and cold drinks will be available for you to have during a refreshment break and are included in the price of the workshop. If you wish to have lunch on site after the study visit you can visit the onsite coffee shop Black Sheep Coffee which sells a range of drinks, sandwiches and snacks. The Venue This event will take place at Gawthorpe Textiles Collection’s venue at Northlight House, a converted textile mill in Brierfield, Lancashire. There is step-free access from the street or car park to our Studio but please be aware there are areas of the car park which have significant slope to them.
