Full description from organizer

This programme explores key threats to cultural venues, effective risk assessment approaches, and operational best practice. Description: The CPD‑Certified Advanced Certificate in Cultural Protection is designed for professionals working within the cultural and heritage sectors who hold responsibility for safeguarding venues and their assets. The programme explores the range of threats faced by cultural and heritage sites, with particular emphasis on adversarial risks and how these may escalate into criminal activity. Participants will examine practical, proactive measures to reduce risk and strengthen asset protection, gaining the knowledge and skills required to conduct effective risk assessments within their own organisations. The overarching aim of the programme is to empower delegates to take a proactive role in protecting cultural assets, both now and for future generations. Lunch and refreshments will be provided on both days. Programme Outline: This is a 2-day programme that includes traditional learning activities, group discussions, and practical exercises that include operational and risk assessment activities. Day 1 (09:00 - 17:00): Following the course introduction, participants will learn about the different threats that can directly impact cultural and heritage venues whether they be natural, adversarial, social, or as a result of human error. This will include the use of case study videos, and discussions. This will be followed by an examination of how adversarial attacks manifest themselves using the ‘Attack Cycle’. Each section of this process is discussed alongside case studies showing how attacks against cultural heritage venues have occurred. The programme examines behavioural analysis through situational awareness, identifying characteristics in human behaviour that can be indicative of suspicious or adversarial activities. As a life skill, the programme also highlights how situational awareness is beneficial for personal safety, as well as the protection of organisational assets in cultural venues. Hostile surveillance used by criminals during the selection and planning stages of an attack is examined, and methods used to proactively detect surveillance are discussed. You will explore the characteristics of surveillance including methodology, types, and indicators that increase the opportunity of identifying pre-attack surveillance against individuals, venues, or exhibits. The last session of the day looks at practical operational activities that all cultural and heritage venues can implement to reduce the risks facing the venues. Day 2 (09:00 - 17:00): The second day focuses on risk management and assessment, beginning with an exploration of the theoretical principles and processes involved. Delegates will be introduced to practical tools that can be applied and adapted to evaluate threats and assess associated risks. These tools will be reinforced through group exercises, enabling participants to incorporate broader perspectives into their assessments and to understand how clearly defined descriptors can help reduce subjectivity in decision‑making. You will then explore risk reduction strategies through the application of a security‑in‑depth approach. This includes the use of multiple, overlapping layers of protection that work together to enhance robustness and resilience. By the end of the session, delegates will have a clear understanding of the different protective layers that can be applied to safeguard both organisational and personal assets. Participants will then be guided through a vulnerability assessment process, first adopting an adversarial mindset to consider how a venue might be targeted, before shifting to a defensive perspective to apply the security‑in‑depth strategies introduced earlier. Finally, delegates will complete a practical risk assessment exercise, identifying threats, risks, and vulnerabilities before considering appropriate risk reduction measures to protect assets and exhibits. This will conclude with a group briefing, allowing participants to present their findings and engage in peer discussion.
