Full description from organizerShow less
Join us for an introduction to the colourful world of Waxcap Fungi on the North York Moors Waxcap Fungi indicate rare, undisturbed grassland. These are meadows and pastures that have not been cultivated or fertilised and are home to an incredible soil ecosystem which recycles nutrients, reduces soil erosion and stores carbon. In the face of climate change, these grasslands are more important than ever before. Mapping fungi-rich grasslands can help conservationists and land managers protect them. This event in Botton Village will introduce you to the identification of various Waxcap Fungi and how local citizen scientists are helping gather this important data. Booking essential This is an exposed site with rough terrain and good level fitness is required, as well as sturdy boots or wellies, warm layers and waterproofs. Please note, any under 18's must be supervised by an adult at all times Further information We will base ourselves at Botton Village Cafe where there is plenty of parking. We can also access toilets here, though we may range quite a distance from them as we head across fields in search of fungi. We will return to the cafe for around 1pm to look at our fungi finds with a hot drink and some cake, which is included in your ticket. Please bring a packed lunch or plan to to buy something at the cafe if you would like to. If you have any questions about the event, please contact [email protected] This is a joint event between the North and East Yorkshire Ecological Recording Centre and Groundwork NE & Cumbria as part of the REConnect Project River Esk Connect (REConnect) is a community engagement project funded by The National Lottery Community Fund, based around the River Esk and its coastal streams. Starting in September 2024 and running for five years, this project’s goal is to ‘REConnect’ people to the beauty of the Esk and its surrounding landscape. We aim to help people create a deeper bond with nature and understand more the impact of climate change on the area, inspiring them to take action to make a difference. Working together, the North York Moors National Park Authority, Groundwork NE & Cumbria, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, and Yorkshire Marine Nature Partnership are delivering educational programmes, volunteering opportunities, and sustainable tourism initiatives. Whitby, Scarborough & Ryedale DAG play a crucial role in ensuring that the project’s events and activities are as accessible as possible, enabling a diverse range of people to get involved. York St. John University act as the internal evaluators, ensuring the project evolves over its five-year duration based on ongoing community feedback and input.
