SW Museum Skills: Hazards in Collections training

You must attend both parts of this training. We would prefer two people to attend from each museum to ensure sufficient support for the implementation of learning and ongoing work. The online training session will act as an introduction to the theory and legislation governing hazardous objects in museum collections. The in person training session will cover the details of the most frequently found hazards in South West museums: arsenic, asbestos, cellulose nitrate film, controlled substances, firearms and explosives, kinetic objects, lead, mercury, mould and radiation. The training sessions will look at the ways in which museums can manage hazardous objects safely, including: • The legislation governing museums • How to identify the hazards in the collection including keywords • How to keep people safe while working around the hazards • How to create and use a Hazard Management Action Plan • Discussions about specific issues The training will include brief practicals. Who should attend? This session is suitable for anyone working in a museum (paid or volunteer) who wants to know how to look after and work with the collection and how to plan for its survival. No previous experience or training is necessary, recommend this training for beginners and those with intermediate knowledge or experience. What will you learn? Attendees will learn: • What hazards may be present in the museum collection • When to consult specialists or relevant authorities • How to plan for the safe management of hazardous objects • Actions they can undertake to improve safety for everyone in the museum Delegates are welcome to bring specific questions and issues to the session.
