Southend CinéScene Presents: Paris, Texas

A drifter returns to Texas after years away, seeking his young son and estranged wife in a haunting tale of love, loss and redemption. Paris, Texas (1984) Directed by Wim Wenders | Starring Harry Dean Stanton, Nastassja Kinski and Dean Stockwell | Running time: approximately 2 hours 25 minutes After four years missing, Travis Henderson emerges from the vast, unforgiving Texas desert, silent, disoriented and seemingly disconnected from the world. Collected by his brother Walt, Travis slowly begins to rebuild his life and reconnect with his young son, Hunter, who has been raised by Walt and his wife. As father and son tentatively rediscover their bond, they embark on a journey to find Hunter’s missing mother, Jane. Their search leads them through the landscapes of the American Southwest and into the neon-lit sprawl of Houston, where Travis must confront the painful memories of his past and the consequences of the life he left behind. Directed by Wim Wenders and written by Sam Shepard, Paris, Texas is a haunting and deeply moving exploration of loneliness, family, identity and the possibility of redemption. Its striking desert cinematography, understated performances and Ry Cooder’s unforgettable slide-guitar soundtrack create an atmosphere of extraordinary beauty and melancholy. Winner of the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival, Paris, Texas remains a landmark of world cinema: a quiet, powerful meditation on love, regret and the fragile connections that make us human.
