It became a trailblazer that reshaped California winemaking. The label, featuring a chained prisoner from Goya’s “Disasters of War” etching, is bold, memorable, and collectible. A complex blend of some of California’s best and most unusual grape varietals, The Prisoner captivated the palates of seasoned and new wine drinkers alike. The wine is inspired by the original wines of California, “mixed blacks” made by Italian immigrants who settled in the region in the 1800s. First produced by winemaker Dave Phinney, The Prisoner was quickly recognised by consumers and critics alike as one of the most innovative California wines in the market, leading the resurgence of California red blends and earning “cult” wine status.
