Planets, Plates & Pairings

Led by an astrophysicist and a sommelier, explore the tastes of the galaxy through an incredible wine tasting journey. Embark on a tasty tour of the galaxy’s planets and exoplanets, led by astrophysicist Alfredo Carpineti and sommelier Alessia Frongillo. We’ll make a series of planetary stops, with Alfredo introducing and exploring the science behind each extraordinary world and Alessia selecting and explaining a wine inspired by its chemistry, colours, atmosphere, geology, smells or tastes. What would a planet made of diamonds taste like? What wine would you pair with a world so dark that it reflects almost no light? How about a planet where it rains glass, a world with clouds of metal, or an exoplanet whose atmosphere would smell sickeningly sweet to human noses? Each planetary world will inspire a different wine and a carefully matched canapé, creating a gastronomic journey through some of the strangest environments in the universe. Please note that while curated canapés will be served with each wine pairing, this is a tasting experience and not a meal. He is a lecturer, science communicator, podcaster, Chair of Pride in STEM, and science writer for IFL Science. ALESSIA FRONGILLO is the Wine Development Manager at wine retailer Matson’s. She is a wine specialist and certified sommelier with a degree in Viticulture and Enology and a WSET Level 3 Award in Wines.
