Full description from organizerShow less
A seminar exploring the growing use of electronic monitoring in the United States criminal justice system and implications for Ireland. ACJRD is delighted to host a seminar exploring the growing use of electronic monitoring — also known as electronic “tagging” — in the United States criminal justice system, and what the US experience can tell us about the present and future of electronic monitoring in Ireland. The seminar is being organised in partnership with the University of Limerick and Erin Eife, Assistant Professor of Criminology, Law and Society at George Mason University and a Fulbright alumna. The event is supported by funding from the Fulbright Commission through the Fulbright Alumni Project Fund. Electronic monitoring is the practice of applying an electronic bracelet or anklet onto the bodies of people who are under carceral control to surveil their movement. It is typically thought to be a solution to prison overcrowding or the expensive costs associated with incarcerating an individual. Yet, so often, these proposed panaceas end up reproducing the problems they seek to alleviate. During the seminar, several experts will speak on the topic, including: • Erin Eife, Assistant Professor, Department of Criminology, Law and Society, George Mason University • Margaret Fitzgerald O’Reilly, Associate Professor, School of Law, University of Limerick • Susan Leahy, Professor, School of Law, University of Limerick With more speakers to be announced... The event will provide an opportunity to critically examine electronic monitoring and consider its broader implications for punishment, surveillance, criminal justice policy, and human rights on both sides of the Atlantic. Registration is open from 1.00pm. Join us then for tea, coffee and sandwhiches before the seminar begins.
