Quiet Scribbles

A child's drawings hold an instinctive freedom, untouched by calculation, a freedom that adults can no longer quite reach. And those vibrant gold and silver origami papers that were so special back then. Both remain precious memories to me. As if tracing those feelings from long ago, I now paint freely, following whatever my heart desires. Within the stillness of these quiet scribbles, what will you sense? The exhibition presents thirteen new oil paintings from the Scribbles series, continuing the work shown in Folded Memories. Folded sheets of coloured paper, each bearing a single looping line: the creases, the tape at the edges, the shadow where the paper lifts from the wall. Most works are F10 (53 x 45.5 cm), with one larger horizontal painting at F50 (116.7 x 91 cm). A selection of earlier portrait works is shown alongside them. Born in Osaka in 1984, Shibagaki began painting at a potter's studio at the age of five. He received an Honorable Mention at the 67th Shinkyo Art Exhibition in 2024, studied abstract and figure oil painting at University of the Arts London in 2025, and held his first solo exhibition, Folded Memories, in London in May 2026.
