Cuenta la historia de dos hermanos, Clara y Fritz. El día de Navidad el padrino de Clara, Drosselmayer, le regala a su sobrina tres cajas con tres regalos diferentes: un arlequín, una colombina y un gran cascanueces. Su hermano, celoso, rompe el cascanueces. El sobrino de Drosselmayer repara el juguete y se lo entrega a la niña. Durante la noche ella se levanta a ver el cascanueces, lo abraza y entonces todo crece y crea vida a su alrededor, llevándola a un mundo mágico
