Anderson's "What is the point of equality?" critiques luck egalitarianism, which broadly refers to the idea that justice means compensating people for bad luck that they didn't choose. Anderson argues that this approach leads to inconsistencies and may even humiliate individuals by forcing them to prove that they're deserving victims of misfortune, noting that the basis of luck egalitarianism is "pity" as opposed to compassion. Anderson instead advocates for "democratic equality", where everyone relates to one another as free and equal citizens, rather than superiors and inferiors.
