Andrée Blouin organised, wrote and fought for a free Congo, but remained largely invisible in the history books. In My Country, Africa, she tells her own story of the pan-African freedom struggle, as a woman and as a métisse (a term for a child of a European, colonial father and an African mother; in colonial times often unacknowledged and held apart from both communities). She grew up in a girls' convent and a world that decided who she was allowed to be. In her story, gender, class and background always intersect. We talk about Blouin's youth and her activism, and look at Congo today: what still remains of her ideals, and what doesn't? A community member opens the conversation.
