This session explores how Picnic uses data and technology to reduce its environmental footprint and encourage sustainable consumer choices.
Full description from organizerShow less
How Picnic is cutting its own footprint and using data to shift customer baskets toward healthier, more sustainable choices. Supermarkets are where the food system meets the household. That means that grocery retailers must consider the high impact of emissions, land use, waste, and diets, while dealing with a set of constraints that most sectors do not face: razor-thin margins, deeply habitual customers, and the fact that almost none of the impact happens inside the business itself. Picnic runs a fully electric last-mile fleet on renewable electricity, with a single delivery replacing roughly two dozen individual trips to a store. Its app-only, order-ahead model lets AI demand forecasting match supply to actual demand rather than to shelf space, holding food waste below one percent against an industry that typically loses several times that. A closed-loop scheme recycles returned delivery bags back into new ones. We will hear about the journey that Picnic has followed to get here, as well as where it plans to go. However, a larger share of the impact sits in what customers buy. Because every Picnic transaction happens in the app, the company can see what people purchase, when they substitute, and what they respond to. Picnic is a signatory to the Dutch commitment to shift to 60 percent plant-based protein sales by 2030. Turning that into millions of individual basket decisions is a problem of assortment design, pricing, ranking, personalization, and behavioral science, all running against habits shaped by culture, convenience, and household budgets. Join us to learn about the sustainability challenges and opportunities faced by supermarkets, and how Picnic is using data and technology to try to improve the sustainability of both its own operations and the decisions made by customers.
