Ride from Glen Eden to Henderson Night Market

Join us for a whānau-friendly cycle to the Henderson Night Market. Meet at Glen Eden Cafe & Eatery for a free warm beverage, then ride together to the Night Market. Wear warm clothes and bring your bike — and for extra fun, decorate your bike glow-in-the-dark style and bring a bluetooth speaker. When: Thursday 17 September, 6pm Where: Meet at Glen Eden Cafe & Eatery Distance: 10km one way, 5km back — View route Cost: Free What to expect • A free hot chocolate or chai latte at Glen Eden Cafe from 6pm. • A friendly group ride at a social, easy pace, with rest stops at the top of hills so everyone can regroup before continuing. • Older children and teenagers who have good cycling balance welcome. All children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult. • For extra fun: decorate your bike glow-in-the-dark style, and bring a bluetooth speaker to add to the vibe. • All bodies and all bikes are welcome — a great way to build your confidence riding at night. The route It will start with a casual meander through the hilly Waikumete Cemetery. The 10km route follows quiet streets, a fairly long downhill stretch on road, and then along shared paths to the Henderson Night Market. Depending on attendees, we may deviate along shared paths alongside Oratia Stream and then ride around Parrs Park gravel tracks just for fun, before continuing on to Henderson. Once we arrive at the Henderson Night Market, you’re welcome to split off and do your own thing, or stick around and hang out with the new friends you’ve made on the ride. At 9pm, join us for an optional group ride back — about 5km, largely on shared pathways — for anyone who’d like company on the way home. Good to know • This is a night ride — bring bike lights (front white, rear red). It’s a legal requirement to have lights on your bike after dark in NZ, as well as a safety essential. • The 9pm return ride is optional — riders are also welcome to make their own way home from the Night Market at any time. • Bikes are allowed on trains, so you could train home from Henderson or Sunnyvale train stations to skip the hill on the way back. Note: the Henderson train station lifts are quite small and may not work for all bike types. • If you're having difficulty with balancing on your bike this ride is not for you. We recommend you attend one of these free Adults or Kids Learn to Ride courses instead. This ride is for people who are confident about their ability to ride a bike but still building their confidence with riding on road, around cars, or at night.
