He was also a familiar face in the orchestra pit at the Isaac Theatre Royal, supporting numerous theatrical productions. Now in Europe, Derwahl leads two compelling original projects: Fernweh, a jazz quartet dedicated to exploring improvisation and emotional depth, and Ōtautahi 20, an Afrobeat ensemble celebrating the music of Fela Kuti. In addition to his own bands, he continues to work as a sideman with various artists across Amsterdam’s vibrant music scene. “Music is the purest expression of emotion. My goal has always been to make the drums and my music express who I am and reflect my experiences,” says Derwahl.
