BWB Talk: Claire Charters in conversation with Carwyn Jones

Please join us for a BWB Talk with Claire Charters (Ngāti Whakaue, Tainui, Tūwharetoa, Ngāpuhi), author of Sovereignty: The Case for Constitutional Transformation. In her new BWB Text, legal scholar Claire Charters says the idea that New Zealand’s constitution protects the rights of everyone is a fairytale. The Crown’s claim to sovereignty, she argues, met none of the legal tests that applied in 1840 under tikanga Māori, British law or international law. An illegal claim has produced an illegitimate state, and a constitution in which Parliament, the executive and the courts can each override Māori rights. Sovereignty makes the case for constitutional transformation, and sets out what it could look like. Charters will be joined in conversation by Carwyn Jones (Ngāti Kahungunu), legal academic and author of Mātangi Rau: The Enduring Potential of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. When: Thursday 12 November, 7pm (doors open 6.30pm) Where: Unity Books Wellington, 57 Willis St, Wellington Central Speakers: Claire Charters and Carwyn Jones Free event. No RSVP needed, but if you're planning to come we'd love to know – it helps us manage numbers. Please click RSVP to register your interest.
