Workshop (EN) – Artists: anna andrejew, Francesca Faulin, Miguel Domingues, Nina Fraser

Four artists in residence within the program of Art and Craft Refugio ‘The Garden as Sanctuary’ create site specific interventions that respond to Jardins do Bombarda, the former psychiatric hospital Miguel Bombarda, as an ecological and historical site of layered significance for the proposed work title ‘breakdown’. Here, breakdown is understood not as failure, but as a collaborative process through which materials, stories, and relations can be recomposed. In this way, the garden emerges as a space where fragility and transformation are held together, allowing new forms of attention and connection to take root. Miguel Domingues (Lisbon, 1982) is an interdisciplinary artist trained in Lisbon, Brussels and Dresden. He has been exhibiting since 2006 and has been awarded the Danny Vienne prize, the DAAD scholarship and the Santander Art Prize. He works with drawing, sculpture and installation. This collaborative workshop brings together artists Francesca Faulin, Miguel Antonio Domingues, Nina Fraser and Anna Andrejew to explore breakdown as a shared artistic and ecological process. Set within the layered context of the former psychiatric hospital at Hospital Miguel Bombarda, the site is approached as a living archive where histories, materials, and personal practices intersect. Hands on, site responsive processes and material transformations will be accompanied by language based practices, where fragments of existing texts are cut, rearranged, and recomposed into new collective stories that explore how meaning and material can shift through acts of care and attention within the garden setting. anna andrejew (she/her) is an artist-researcher and care worker with a background in ethnography and permaculture. Recent projects include Be Like Water (funded by the Dutch Research Council, 2025), The Memory of Matter (ACPA/KABK, 2025), Practicing Breakdown – On Elemental Collaboration (Listening Academy, Lisbon, 2026), and the publication The First Impression on Your Skin (2024). Francesca Faulin (1985) b. Venice, Italy, graduated in Sociology from University of Milan in 2005, and completed a Master level course in Fine Art Photography at IPCI in Lisbon. Francesca's practice focuses on photography, writing, research and manipulation of archives. St. Albans, UK, is a multidisciplinary artist, reflecting upon a sense of place to shape memory traces into physical form. She holds a Postgraduate Degree in Curating and Commissioning Public Art from HDK-Valand, University of Gothenburg, and Bachelor's Degree in Textile Art from Winchester College of Arts, University of Southampton (UK). She is artistic coordinator of Art&craft Craft Refugio.
