Full description from organizerShow less
Hands on training for BIPOC and LQBTQIA community to level up our carpentry and building skills. This Hands On Introduction to Carpentry is designed to equip and inspire changemakers, community builders, farmers and food fighters to “level up” our hard skills in building and construction. In order to build the just and sustainable world we desire, we need more than theoretical ideas. We need to know how to produce the material conditions for community survival – food, shelter, trade, and medicine – or we will remain entirely dependent on an exploitative capitalist system. This daylong deep dive will be an opportunity to learn safe hand and power tool use, layout, measuring, fastening, and some of the basics of working with wood through a beginner building project. WHO SHOULD ATTEND: The workshop is designed for BIPOC (Black Indigenous People of Color) who are beginners or advanced beginners. Participants must be at least 16 years old. Some familiarity with carpentry tools, measuring and layout is requested, however no previous building experience is required. 20 spots available. We are committed to reserving the majority of the spots for women, femmes, and/or trans*/nonbinary people as those communities are least likely to be included in trades. Please only register if you are able to attend the entire day as space is limited. Once capacity is reached, a waitlist will be enable. Cost: The sliding scale is $50 - $200 and you are welcome to pay what you can even if it is less than the start of the scale. We never want price to be a barrier. Enter promo code mitre if the sliding scale does not work for you and you need a fee waiver. Registration Form: The registration form requires a short bio, skills assessment and your learning goals. Accessibility Notes Weather: We gather rain or shine. Water: Please bring a reusable water bottle and avoid single use plastic containers. Food: A vegan plant based lunch will be provided. Feel free to bring your own food to supplement the offering. Clothing: Closed toed shoes are required. If you have safety goggles or small handheld tools you’d like to practice with, please feel free to bring them. No supplies are required. Bathroom: There are 7 indoor bathrooms. 3 of the indoor bathrooms are equipped with changing tables and 3 are ADA accessible. During warmer months, there are 3 additional toilet stalls and 3 hand washing/ water bottle filling stations that can be accessed from outside. Sensory Environment: There may be multiple conversations or background noise happening at once. Depending on the task and location, it may be difficult to hear low voices. Interaction level: High. We will invite guests to share personal stories and will ask a variety of questions about people’s experience with carpentry. Language: The program will facilitated in English Animals: There are sheep, chickens, free range cats and our working farm dog Jax present.
