Full description from organizerShow less
A special presentation by the author Vladimir Dzuro, an emeritus police investigator and former head of UN Investigative Teams. What do war criminals, dictators, corrupt politicians, and senior officials have in common? The intoxicating grip of power—the belief that they are untouchable and that their power puts them above the law. Vladimir Dzuro will introduce his new book, recently published in the Czech Republic, Vyšetřovatel – zločiny privilegovaných, and take us behind the scenes of global diplomacy at the highest levels. Dzuro’s previous book, The Investigator: Demons of the Balkan War (2019, Nebraska Press), is a firsthand report on the operations that led to the arrest of the first war criminal in the former Yugoslavia, as well as his investigations into numerous war crimes committed in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Part investigative memoir and part real-life thriller, it offers a rare inside perspective on the pursuit of justice in the Yugoslav wars. Available in English: https://www.nebraskapress.unl.edu/potomac-books/9781640121959/the-investigator/Seats are limited on a first-come, first-served basis. ------------------------------- Vladimír Dzuro, Emeritus Police Commissioner, served as a Criminal Investigator with the Police of the Czech Republic from 1983 to 1995, first in the Criminal Police Department and later at the National Central Bureau of Interpol in Prague. He took an active part in the work of the United Nations peacekeeping forces in the former Yugoslavia (UNPROFOR) in 1994 and, starting in April 1995, he served for more than nine years as an investigator with the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague, Netherlands. Until March 2023, he headed the United Nations Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) in New York. He currently lectures as a freelancer in the Czech Republic and abroad. ----------------- This event is organized by the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences (SVU) New York, with support from the Bohemian Benevolent and Literary Association (BBLA).
