With current technologies, food is the limiting resource, making deep-space missions impractical—but Taylor’s research points to a promising solution. In this talk, you’ll learn about closed-loop biomanufacturing, a sustainable approach that uses microbes like yeast and bacteria, grown on recycled resources, to produce nutritious and palatable foods. Taylor will explain the unique challenges of bioengineering for space and how these next-generation systems could turn science fiction—think “The Martian”—into reality. Taylor conducts her research in Professor George Church’s lab at Harvard University. An aspiring astronaut, she is also working toward her Private Pilot License and is an avid SCUBA diver, bringing an explorer’s mindset to the frontiers of space nutrition.
