Crystal 101: Less Woo, More Ooo

In this interactive introduction to crystals and minerals, Leanne Winn, founder of Modern Mineral, invites participants to explore the fascinating world of crystals through a unique lens—blending a little geology, a little human psychology, and a lot of curiosity. We’ll begin with the basics: how minerals and crystals form, and what makes them scientifically remarkable. From there, we’ll explore the long human history of assigning meaning to natural objects, including some of the metaphysical properties commonly associated with crystals. Together, we’ll consider the difference between being told what a crystal should mean and discovering what genuinely captures your own attention. Through hands-on exercises with real mineral specimens, participants will have the opportunity to choose and experience minerals before learning their names, origins, or traditionally associated properties—encouraging observation, intuition, and personal connection. No previous knowledge is needed. Skeptics, collectors, rockhounds, crystal lovers, and the simply curious are all warmly welcome. All materials are provided, and each participant will leave with two personally selected mineral specimens to take home.
