Advanced Re-Purposed Book Binding

This 3 week class is a great way of advancing your book making knowledge! Course Dates: 3 sessions, October 14th, 21st, and 28th Wednesday, 6-8p.m. Course Description: This 3 week-long course is designed for participants who have some bookbinding experience and really want to delve into the exploration of materials. The first two sessions will be devoted to learning multi-signature book forms such as the long-stitch and Coptic stitch to expand the possibilities of sewing paper and other found materials into traditional book forms. The second half of the course will be devoted to exploring what goes beyond tradition—and how the materials we source around us plays a part in defining how a book is made. Students will be asked to think about the objects found at the Wasteshed to create new interactions between “book and reader,” playing with folding, stitching, and gluing to design and fabricate several sample books that can continue to be explored beyond the class. Instructor: Regin Igloria Regin Igloria is a multidisciplinary artist and educator based in Chicago. His drawings, artists’ books, sculptures, and performances portray the human condition as it relates to the natural environment and inhabited spaces. With a background in arts administration and education, he founded North Branch Projects, an extension of his studio practice that builds connections through the book arts. His work creates crossover between various communities and populations, aiming to broaden the roles of both artists and non-artists. Igloria has taught at places such as Marwen, Rhode Island School of Design, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Snow City Arts, and Carthage College. He received a 3Arts Next Level Teaching Artist and Individual Award as well as local, national, and international grants and support through artist residencies. His work has been exhibited internationally. He received his MFA from Rhode Island School of Design. Experience Level: This class is geared toward intermidiate and up book makers that have taken a class or two in bookmaking What’s Provided: • All materials will be provided • Participants can expect to make 3-4 examples of different types of books Getting There/Where to Park: Humboldt - Free street parking is available on the street outside of The WasteShed, but spots may be limited so please plan accordingly.
