Full description from organizerShow less
This training equips participants with practical, brain-based strategies to better understand behavior, improve communication, and support. Presented by John D. Corrigan, PhD While some acquired brain injuries result in profound cognitive impairment, many do not; however, the individual may still have specific neurobehavioral weaknesses (e.g., limited attention, poor memory, impulsivity). Healthcare and social service professionals routinely misattribute behavior that is due to neurologic impairment as reflecting motivation or intention. Like trauma informed care, Neurologic Informed Care is not a specific treatment but is awareness and understanding of an important characteristic of a person served. Neurologic Informed Care occurs when the treatment setting is aware of the potential impact of cognitive and behavioral impairments on treatment participation and success; the treatment providers know how to identify impairments in a person they are caring for; and the setting and the provider employ simple accommodations in how they deliver care so as to mitigate the impact of cognitive impairment. This presentation provides the knowledge base for healthcare and social service professionals to engage in Neurologic Informed Care and introduces strategies for accommodating cognitive and behavioral weaknesses in both the setting and the session. About the Presenter John D. Corrigan, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at The Ohio State University and Director of the Ohio Valley Center for Brain Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation.
