How This Class Works — Our "Pay It Forward" Model: Normally, building a cutting board from scratch means gluing up strips of wood and waiting 24 hours for the glue to cure before you can do anything else. That's fine in a home shop, but it means you'd leave class empty-handed. We solved that. In this class, you'll learn the entire process from start to finish. You'll select your wood, cut the strips, and glue up a brand new board — which gets set aside to cure for the next class. Then you'll pick up a board that was glued up by a previous student and take it through the rest of the process: flattening, shaping, routing the juice groove and handles, sanding, and finishing. You walk out the door with a completed cutting board in your hands, and the board you glued up will be waiting for the next student to finish. Everyone pays it forward. This means you get hands-on experience with every single step of the build — from raw lumber to finished product — in one class session. What You'll Learn: • Selecting and cutting wood — Choosing species, ripping strips to width, and arranging them into an eye-catching pattern • Glue-up technique — How to properly glue and clamp a panel so it comes out flat and tight • Flattening and squaring — Using the planer and table saw to true up the board • Routing a juice groove — Using the Rockler Juice Groove Jig to cut a clean, consistent channel around the board that catches liquids while you're cutting meats, fruits, and vegetables • Shaping handles — Using Rockler handle templates to route comfortable hand grips into the sides of the board • Sanding and finishing — Taking the board to a smooth, food-safe finish What You'll Take Home: A finished, food-safe hardwood cutting board with a routed juice groove and shaped handles — ready to use in your kitchen or give as a gift.
