Full description from organizer

Training Force USA is proud to partner with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office to bring this essential digital investigations course to the region. Every device connected to the internet leaves a traceable digital footprint. An IP address is often the single most critical starting point for linking online criminal activity to a specific device and, ultimately, to a suspect. This isn't limited to cybercrime units. Local investigators run into IP data in fraud cases, harassment complaints, threats made online, and everyday property crimes, often without a clear framework for interpreting it, acting on it, or documenting it in a way that holds up legally. This course closes that gap. Understanding and Tracing IP Addresses is a focused, 4-hour operational training that gives investigators a structured, step-by-step process for locating and tracing IP and MAC addresses in criminal investigations. No specialized unit, software, or prior technical background is required. Participants will leave with practical tools, applied techniques, and the foundational knowledge needed to build a defensible digital evidence trail on their very next case. What You Will Learn • How Internet Protocols function and what an IP address actually is, explained in plain language • How IP and MAC addresses are assigned and what makes them unique • How to identify IP address data within a case and establish accurate timeline considerations • Methods for tracing an IP address to a specific physical device • The investigative significance of routers and network infrastructure • Proper procedures for issuing subpoenas for IP subscriber information • How IP tracing integrates into broader case strategy and evidentiary development, no matter the size of your caseload or agency Your Instructor Dr. Bill Hunkapiller serves as Florida State University's Chief Information Security and Privacy Officer, leading teams across Security Architecture, Security Operations, and Risk, Compliance, and Privacy. With more than 30 years of experience across government, higher education, and Fortune 500 environments, Dr. Hunkapiller is widely recognized for building resilient cybersecurity programs and translating complex technical concepts into practical, mission-ready guidance for real-world agencies. He collaborates regularly with local, state, and federal law enforcement and is a sought-after speaker at national and international conferences. Who Should Attend This training is designed for all sworn and professional staff engaged in operations, investigations, analysis, or technology decisions, including command staff and supervisors, crime analysts and RTCC personnel, detectives and investigative units, IT and cybersecurity staff supporting law enforcement, and any agency actively exploring or evaluating AI solutions.
