A step-by-step process on the proper methods of using tracing IP addresses to locate digital devices and evidence in investigations. An Operational Guide to Identifying and Locating Digital Devices Every device connected to the internet generates identifiable network data. An IP address is often the critical starting point in linking online activity to a specific device and, ultimately, to an individual. Understanding how Internet Protocols function gives investigators the foundation needed to establish, interpret, and document a defensible digital footprint. This course provides a structured framework for locating and tracing IP and MAC addresses that are central to identifying devices used in criminal activity. Participants will learn how IP data connects to physical devices, networks, and investigative leads. Course Topics: This training delivers a clear, step-by-step process for properly tracing IP addresses during investigations. Students will apply investigative techniques and utilize practical tools to follow IP address data, develop timelines, and identify actionable case evidence. The course is designed to strengthen both digital and traditional investigative skills, reinforcing how IP tracing integrates into broader case strategy and evidentiary development. · How Internet Protocols function · What an IP address is and how it is assigned · The uniqueness of IP and MAC addresses · Identifying IP address data and understanding timeline considerations · Methods for tracing an IP address to a specific device · The investigative significance of routers and network infrastructure · Proper procedures for issuing subpoenas for IP subscriber information TARGET AUDIENCE: ALL members of the criminal justice and legal community (sworn or non-sworn).
