Signs of Life: An Exhibition by Matt Stewart & Brian Wenner

Signs of Life explores the beauty, complexity, and expansiveness of the American Southwest through bringing together large-scale oil paintings by Matt Stewart and an original sound composition by Brian Wenner. Inspired by their own separate journeys through the Southwest, Stewart’s paintings depict the harsh, arid desert terrain with hallucinatory color vibrancy, while Wenner’s score encompasses textural found sounds and melodic drones evocative of the landscape. Signs of Life is the first collaboration between Stewart and Wenner. The universe tends toward entropy, toward heat death, and toward equilibrium. Life is the local reversal of that trend. It’s where systems take in energy and use it to sustain pattern and complexity. The show will evolve over the evening, descending towards equilibrium and dancing, with the support of some of our favorite local selectors.
