Only ~15% of nitrogen added to cropland makes it all the way from farm to fork. It escapes as N₂O, a greenhouse gas roughly 273x more potent than CO₂, or as runoff that pollutes waterways. Agriculture is the single largest driver of these problems, which also makes it a critical sector for driving change through advocacy, policy, and investment. It's possible to make real progress on more sustainable nitrogen management: there are clear pathways toward mitigating emissions and cutting pollution, while improving farmer profitability.
