You may already know Craig by his signature bun, his charisma, or his unmistakable voice in Utah’s backcountry community. But beyond the personality is a standout legacy: Craig Gordon is one of the most recognized faces of avalanche forecasting, education, and backcountry safety in Utah. Meet the Speaker: Craig Gordon You may already know him by his bun, his charisma, or from his stand out legacy: Craig Gordon is a world renowned avalanche forecaster and educator, widely recognized as the face of avalanche and backcountry safety in the state of Utah. Craig Moved to Utah in 1984 where he found work as a ski patroller for Brighton Ski Resort. During his 10 years on patrol, he became the first designated avalanche forecaster for the resort. Since, Craig has spent over 25 years as an avalanche forecaster for the Utah Avalanche Center, retiring this past season, in the spring of 2026. In 2004, Craig helped cofound “Know Before You Go,” a free avalanche safety program designed to educate backcountry users of all types about avalanche awareness. Its framework is used as a foundation for avalanche safety classes across the globe today. Craig’s knowledge of Little Cottonwood Canyon, Alta, and their avalanches, coupled with his fiery enthusiasm and willingness to educate make him one of the most entertaining and insightful speakers the region has to offer.
