EcoWalk: Nature Immersion - Red Bug Slough Preserve

Join us for a morning of finding connection to and restoration within nature along a mostly silent walk. The Nature Immersion experience is a 2 ½ hour guided walk that offers a structured set of gentle suggestions guiding participants to connect and interact with the natural world around us in a quiet, mindful, and slow exploration. Nature Immersions are based on Forest Therapy, a practice developed in the US, that is similar to the Japanese art of forest bathing, or shinrin-yoku. Both approaches support people to utilize their many senses while being present with their experience in nature, immersing one’s self as if “bathing in the forest”. ***This is not a hike or an interpretive walk focused on identifying species or educating about ecosystems. Portions of experience will involve sitting on ground. Please bring a portable chair if needed, or a towel or yoga mat if desired. Bring water to stay hydrated and wear clothing and footwear to be comfortable outdoors all morning. Sandals, flip flops, heels, and crocs are not recommended. Research has found that there are multiple physical and mental health benefits to spending time in nature. These include decreased stress and anxiety, improved cardiovascular and immune function, and improved mood, attention, and sleep. Come enjoy these benefits while being immersed in the beautiful landscape of Red Bug Slough Preserve! Guided by a UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County ecology and natural resources educator, Dr. Katherine Clements, who is also completing her certification as a Forest Therapy Guide and Nature as Medicine Practitioner through ANFT. Meet in front of the bathrooms. Please register for this event ONLY at ufsarasotaext.eventbrite.com rather than any third-party websites, as they are not affiliated with our classes and events. No prior experience needed. Recommended to wear comfortable, loose clothing and bring water and a portable chair or blanket to sit upon as we will stop to sit along the trail. Appropriate for ages 12-102. *****Trail Accessibility Information: Trail surface/conditions: ADA accessible trail from parking area to fishing dock; remainder of trails natural surface, mostly well-packed sandy soil or low, grassy surface: some areas of loose sand. Potential obstacles/barriers/hazards: Tree roots or ruts in some areas but most surfaces fairly level and easy to traverse. Accessibility options available: Recycled rubber composite ADA trail from parking area to fishing dock area (approximately 0.2 mile).
