Govardhan Puja has been celebrated for thousands of years in temples, towns, villages, communities and homes, with wonderful chanting, dancing and feasting. Govardhan Puja celebrates the transcendental love and protection that the Supreme Soul, Krishna, offers to everyone. It reminds us that Krishna is perfectly capable of lifting the burdens we carry on our shoulders and in our hearts. In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna tells Arjuna, and all of us, “Do not fear, I will give you all protection.” This promise is wonderfully brought to life in the famous pastime of Govardhan Puja, one of the most celebrated pastimes of Lord Sri Krishna. When devastating rainfall threatened the people of Vrindavan, Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill with one hand, holding it aloft like a giant umbrella to shelter His dear friends and the entire village community from the torrential rain.
