Feathers & Field Notes: An Aussie Bird Count Journalling Experience

This immersive experience has participants sitting amongst native bushland, observing and painting birds as part of the Aussie Bird Count As part of the Aussie Bird Count, Australia’s largest annual citizen science event, you are invited to spend the morning recording birds around you while nestled in the beautiful Gungahlin Hill Nature Reserve. The Aussie Bird Count, run by BirdLife Australia, helps build a national snapshot of the birds Australians see each spring and contributes to understanding how bird populations are faring. This immersive journalling experience invites you to look beyond simply counting birds and become curious about their world. Sitting amongst the native bushland, observe birds as they move through their environment. Discover hollows, watch birds feeding on nectar, calling and singing to each other. Bushnooky facilitator Elyssa will explore local birdlife through a science communication lens, helping participants understand the ecological relationships between birds, plants, other wildlife and the wider woodland ecosystem. Large A2 floor easels create a grounding space for observation and journalling. Use drawing, painting or writing to capture what you notice, and we will make a group submission to the count with our observations. No birdwatching or painting experience is necessary. Come with curiosity, take a moment to sit quietly and discover the stories unfolding around you. Registration is per easel, participants are welcome to share with their child/ren or register multiple. All equipment is provided, tea and biscuits too :) This experience takes place outdoors and at ground level, with participants sitting on the ground while using floor easels. As a result, it may not be suitable for people who have difficulty getting down to or up from the ground, or who require accessible seating. Where to go: Meet at the Reserve Entry on Cocoparra Crescent and we will make our way to the site as a group. Detailed map will be sent to participants 2 days prior to event.
