Shiny Things Workshop - Painting Metallics with Rachel Favelle

‘Shiny Things’ is the first in a series of painting workshops examining shiny still life objects. In this workshop you will be exploring the techniques behind creating convincing metallic surfaces using slow-drying acrylics. Working from brass, gold and silver objects, we’ll look closely at how light, colour and value interact to create the illusion of reflective metal. From warm, glowing gold and brass to the cooler reflections of silver, you’ll develop practical techniques for painting a range of metallic surfaces with greater confidence and realism. What will I learn? • Colour mixing for metals: creating the distinctive colour palettes needed for brass, gold and silver. • Colour shifts in reflected light: discovering how reflected colours transform the appearance of metallic surfaces. • Blending and glazing: using smooth transitions and transparent layers to build luminosity and depth. • Gradual value shifts: learning to control light and dark to describe form and create convincing reflections.
