What: To begin, the offering is for Beginner One and Two classes on the same night with two seperate teachers. Yet September will only house Beginner One at this stage. These entry level classes will occur once per fortnight on a Monday evening. Opening your world to foundational rope skills, safety and consent, rope lineages, frictions-tensions-locks. Then working through second part of beginners to build your well established foundational knowledge into proper harnesses for every part of the body, with the above foundations in mind. Where: Housed in a beautiful natural light filled space, that at its Grass Roots holds values for community, connection and inclusivity which send a positive vibe the moment you walk in the door. The added benefit of onsite parking is certainly a privilege! Why: It does not matter your age or identity, we welcome all humans who share a common interest in making connections, building community, and exploring the space of shared experience in rope. If it is something you have been wanting to discover - now is your chance! Have you attended an intensive? Continue the journey in class here..... Facilitators: Ashkr @fathom_ties (he/him) comes from a maritime background, working as a boat captain where ropework has always been part of everyday life, tying knots, splicing, rigging, and securing loads. That hands-on experience naturally led into an interest in shibari. He has been tying and learning for the past two and a half years across various schools in Melbourne, with a consistent practice rooted primarily in Peer Rope Melbourne. What began as curiosity quickly became a dedicated path, and he continues to train in advanced classes while deepening his understanding of both technique and connection. Ashkrr is an active member of the community, with a long-standing involvement in spaces that support marine conservation, men's mental health and environmental protection bringing a strong sense of care, responsibility, and presence into the environments he’s part of. He is drawn to the balance within rope, the focus and satisfaction of clean aesthetic ties, the intensity the rope energy can hold, and the connection it creates between people. For him, shibari is a way to build trust, presence, and deeper connection. As a teacher, Ashkrr focuses on creating a supportive, respectful environment where people can develop solid foundations, explore safely, and find their own relationship with rope. He is currently stepping into teaching beginner classes on Monday nights on the south side! FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions): Q. What should I wear? A. We suggest you wear something comfortable, ensuring ease of movement. For anyone wearing a bra, we recommend wearing one without the metal wire (like a sports bra). It could be painful if we practice a chest harness and you are the model. Q: Do I need to bring my own ropes? A: No, you don't need to bring your own ropes if you don't have any. We have plenty available for everyone participating in the Beginner course. Q. Do I need a partner for these classes? A. No, a partner is not required for the Beginner 1/2 classes, and solo attendees are more than welcome. Remember, even if there are often people to practice with, this is not guaranteed. However, most of the ties in this course are easy to practice on yourself. Q. What if I miss one of the classes? A. If you know you will miss the first class, we recommend you join the next scheduled course. The first class is where we introduce important concepts such as consent, boundaries and safety. If you miss one of the other 3 classes, then don't worry. Our teachers always review the main ties, taught in the previous session, at the beginning of each class, ensuring you stay on track with the material. Q. I just ended my B1 course, but I don't feel ready for Beginner 2. What are my options? A. No worries! Feel free to rejoin Beginner 1 next month or book the next intensive beginner class to keep practising the B1 level. Also, each class/course is led by one of our exceptional teachers, and each of them features a unique teaching style and may introduce additional ties and styles, providing you with a well-rounded learning experience. Q. Can I get a refund if I miss a class or the entire course? A. Unfortunately, tickets are non-refundable however, they can be transferred to another person (for the same event). Contact Jess through @starlove.shibari or @peerropemelbourne on Instagram or email us at [email protected] to facilitate the transfer.
