About this event

Full description from organizer

This International Day of People with Disability, join us for an important local conversation about preventing everyday harm — what it looks like, how we recognise it, and what we can do together to prevent it. Everyone experiences everyday harm, but for people with disability it happens more often. Because it happens so frequently, sometimes these experiences are dismissed, overlooked or accepted as part of everyday life. But everyday harm matters, and we can all take steps to prevent and address it. The Working Together: Preventing Everyday Harm research brings together the experiences and perspectives of people with disability, support workers and organisations to understand everyday harm and identify practical ways to prevent and address it. Hear from Professor Sally Robinson (Flinders University), Professor Karen Fisher (UNSW) and Ruby Nankivell, a community researcher with lived experience of intellectual disability, about their national Working Together: Preventing Everyday Harm project, what they have learned and the practical resources developed through the research. We'll also hear from Jeff Smith, NSW Ageing and Disability Commissioner, about the work of the Commission and the rights of people with disability to have choice and control, be listened to, speak up and be safe, and the role we all play in creating communities where rights are respected. Most importantly, this is a chance to come together locally — people with disability, families, support workers, disability organisations and community members — to explore what everyday harm looks like, what helps people feel and be safe, and what we can do differently here in the Hunter. International Day of People with Disability is an opportunity to recognise the leadership and contributions of people with disability, challenge barriers to inclusion and work together towards communities where everyone's rights, choices and voices are respected. We'd love you to be part of the conversation. This event is proudly supported by the NSW Ageing and Disability Commission as part of its commitment to preventing abuse, neglect and exploitation and promoting the rights, safety and inclusion of people with disability. We also gratefully acknowledge Newcastle Museum for generously providing the venue and supporting this important community conversation.
