Engaging, thought provoking lectures by experts, professors and storytellers in Ottawa bars 📚Lecture: "True Crime, Pop Culture & Gender" ⏱️Time: Doors: 6pm Lecture: 7pm 🎤Speaker: Bailey Reid (PhD candidate in Sociology and the Senior Advisor on Gender and Sexual Violence at Carleton University.) Since Serial helped push true crime into the mainstream, the genre has exploded across podcasts, documentaries, television, books, and social media. Many of these stories centre on gender based voilence, including sexual violence, femicide, and intimate partner violence, while audiences often say they turn to true crime for education, awareness and personal safety. This lecture explores why people and particulary women, are drawn to true crime, while also examining the ways the genre can repeat victim-blaming, rape myths, and harmful stereotypes. Drawing on an intersectional feminist analysis, Bailey Reid asks whether true crime can be reimagined as a tool for care, prevention, and advocacy and what it might look like to tell and consume these stories in a more thoughtful, "care-full" way. Bailey Reid is a PhD candidate in Sociology and the Senior Advisor on Gender and Sexual Violence at Carleton University. Her Masters degree in Sociology focused on the intersections of true crime and gender-based violence. With a firm understanding of how the power of words can influence social change, she previously worked as a Digital Strategist at MediaStyle, the Coordinator for the Sexual Assault Network of Ottawa, andas a Women’s Rights Campaigner for Oxfam Canada.
