Valdy

Remembered for Play Me a Rock and Roll Song, his bitter-sweet memory of finding himself, a relaxed and amiable story-teller, facing a rambunctious audience at the Aldergrove Rock Festival circa 1968, Valdy has sold almost half a million copies of his 13 albums, has two Juno Awards (Folk Singer of the Year and Folk Entertainer of the Year), a total of seven Juno nominations and four Gold albums to his credit. Valdy’s recent CDs include “Contenders”, a collaboration with friend and fellow singer/songwriter, Gary Fjellgaard, with whom he has an absolute blast touring, and a solo release, “Viva Valdy: Live at Last”, a two-CD package, one live, one studio, with a total of 25 tunes, and a lyric booklet. One of Canada’s most influential songwriters, Valdy’s composition A Good Song was recorded under the title Just a Man by the venerable Quincy Jones ( he sang lead on the recording!). Play Me a Rock and Roll Song has been recorded by a few artists, including John Kay of Steppenwolf. Along the way, Valdy has taken his music to a dozen different countries, from Denmark to Australia and been an often-invited performer at the prestigious Kerrville Festival in Texas. His past television appearances include Canada AM and Open Mike with Mike Bullard. Valdy has also been a panelist on Front Page Challenge, and played a lead role in an episode of The Beachcombers original series. --/-- Valdy, né Valdemar Horsdal à Ottawa, au Canada, fait partie intégrante de la scène pop et folk canadienne depuis près de 40 ans. Homme aux mille amis, de Terre-Neuve à l’île de Vancouver, en passant par le Texas et la Nouvelle-Zélande, c’est un chanteur, guitariste et auteur-compositeur qui sait saisir ces petits moments révélateurs qui composent la vie. On se souvient de lui pour « Play Me a Rock and Roll Song », son souvenir doux-amer de sa découverte de soi, celui d’un conteur détendu et aimable face à un public turbulent au Aldergrove Rock Festival vers 1968. Valdy a vendu près d’un demi-million d’exemplaires de ses 13 albums, a remporté deux prix Juno (Chanteur folk de l’année et Artiste folk de l’année), totalise sept nominations aux prix Juno et compte quatre disques d’or à son actif. Parmi les CD récents de Valdy, on trouve « Contenders », une collaboration avec son ami et collègue chanteur-compositeur Gary Fjellgaard, avec qui il prend un immense plaisir à partir en tournée, ainsi qu’un album solo, « Viva Valdy: Live at Last », un coffret de deux CD, l’un live, l’autre studio, comprenant au total 25 titres et un livret de paroles. L’un des auteurs-compositeurs les plus influents du Canada, Valdy a vu sa composition « A Good Song » enregistrée sous le titre « Just a Man » par le vénérable Quincy Jones (qui a d’ailleurs assuré le chant principal sur cet enregistrement !). « Play Me a Rock and Roll Song » a été reprise par plusieurs artistes, dont John Kay, du groupe Steppenwolf.
