Politics can feel a little twisted these days — so let's untangle some of it over pretzels. I think if you don't vote, you don't get a say — and the people who do vote end up deciding things for you. A few friends have told me they feel apathetic about voting, like their vote won't move the needle. Others say they don't feel informed enough on the issues and would rather sit it out. In our next session, I'd like to understand why Ontario Provincial Government wants to change its Environmental Bill of Rights and figure out what that means. I'm not a political expert, just someone happy to keep the conversation moving. — Dihan Chandra Background: On October 27, the Ontario government posted a proposal to change the Environmental Bill of Rights, the 1993 law that gives ordinary people a formal say in environmental decisions. If it goes ahead, residents would lose the ability to ask the government to review an existing law or policy, and to request an investigation when someone is allegedly breaking environmental rules. Ministries would also no longer be required to write and follow Statements of Environmental Values, and the right to sue over harm to a public resource would be repealed. The government's case is that these tools duplicate other processes and slow down projects, and that people can still raise concerns directly with ministries. Critics say a phone call or email isn't the same as a legal right to a response. Both views deserve a hearing, and that's what we want to do at our next Pretzels and Politics. Complimentary Food:Soft pretzels from Spent Goods (plant-based, contains gluten) — so grab dinner beforehand :)
