Field Recording & Sound Collage

A workshop for anyone curious about listening and about what happens when you turn the sounds around you into something composed. This is a workshop for anyone interested in listening practices and what happens when you turn the sounds around you into something composed. We'll begin at Tempelhofer Feld with a deep listening exercise to settle and sharpen our ears. Then we'll set off on a slow, mostly-silent 30-minute walk across the field, recording whatever catches our attention. No musical or technical background required; if you have a phone, you already have everything you need to start. From there, we'll walk back to Osmos Studio in Schillerkiez to warm up with hot tea and explore some sound collage and compositional tools with our recordings. We'll listen to a few reference points: Steve Reich's phasing technique, and Delia Derbyshire's approach to building structured, architectural pieces out of manipulated recordings. Using these as inspiration, you'll build your own sound collage from the recordings you made, using freely accessible software (Audacity, plus some tools I've built myself). We'll close with a listening session where everyone can share what they made (no pressure, no critique). What to expect: • Deep listening / focus exercises • A guided 30-minute field recording walk at Tempelhof • Learn about the works of composers Reich and Derbyshire • Learn about free audio tools and experiment with them yourself What to bring: • A smartphone with a voice recording app (I recommend MOTIV Audio) or your own recording device if you have one • Headphones or earbuds • A laptop, if you'd like to continue your piece afterward (not required) • Weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes for walking Good to know: • No prior experience with recording, sound, or music software needed • We'll be outdoors for roughly 40 minutes regardless of weather, dress accordingly • Duration: 2–2.5 hours • Price: €20 • Email me if you would like to attend and pay cash
