This year’s Hierarchies of Racism? series continues with an examination of racial disparities within the British healthcare system. In this talk, Dr Ekene Agbim will discuss the work from the British Medical Journal, the General Medical Council, and the Workforce Race Equality Standard regarding racism in medicine, as well as her own involvement as the inaugural London co-chair of the British Medical Association Forum for Racial and Ethnic Equality. The presentation will examine the experiences of healthcare staff from the global majority in comparison to their white counterparts concerning bullying, harassment, differential attainment, and complaints, alongside the experiences of patient groups from the global majority. Ultimately, the presentation will emphasise the importance of developing solutions to address racism and prejudice within healthcare systems, supported by data showing that resolving these issues improves the quality of care for all patients. Join us for an important conversation exploring racial inequality within healthcare, its impact on minoritised communities, and the frameworks designed to address it. Speaker Dr Ekene Agbim is a primary care doctor in Peckham, Southeast London. She has a postgraduate diploma in lifestyle medicine and has been awarded a postgraduate diploma in healthcare data from Cambridge University. Dr Agbim was elected inaugural co-chair of London doctors who identify as ethnic minorities, in the British Medical Association’s Forum for Racial and Ethnic Equality (FREE). In addition, Dr Agbim was the first Equality, Diversity and Inclusion lead for the Royal College of General Practitioners, South London faculty, a role she held for two years. Dr Agbim served on the Medical Workforce Race Equality Standard (MWRES) steering group, which included representatives from senior clinical staff and the General Medical Council. Dr Agbim is currently a board member of the Royal College of General Practitioners South London Faculty and a London representative of the British Medical Association.
