Karen Loader: An exhibition of drawings

For this exhibition, Loader presents four series of abstract drawings made between 2021 and 2024. Each series follows on from the previous one and explores how we make sense of our surroundings. Interested in theories of perception and phenomenology, Loader's body of work investigates rhythm and movement, colour and form and temporality to encourage the viewer to think about our experiences of place and space and how we interact with the environment. "I believe that our environment has a significant impact on our subconscious, contributing to our emotions and perceptions by the way in which we interact with the spatial geometries around us. This includes how our bodies perceive space in a sensory way through rhythm and movement, noticing phenomena such as light and temperature and sensing the proximity or distance of things. My drawings and paintings incorporate geometric patterns and motifs using systems of slippage, rotation, reversal and repetition, as well as differences in scale to highlight how subtle variations can influence how we interpret what we see and how this forms our unique understanding of place." (Karen Loader) Once home to Pink Floyd's recording studio and famous for the video 'Another Brick in the Wall, Part Two', Britannia Row is now in the process of being re-developed and currently running as a mean-while use cultural space whilst planning applications are being considered.
