IN PERSON – The Care Manifesto: Book Launch with The Care Collective

Despite widespread interest in our Care Manifesto, since its publication we have seen not a growing embrace of the politics of care, but, rather, an intensification in the politics of carelessness and cruelty. Indeed, over the past half decade, the world has witnessed continued warfare, mass human destruction, the amassing of ever more obscene wealth by the few, ongoing austerity, and ‘care-stripping’. Yet even in these times of despair, there is also evidence of increased grassroots resistance and support for better lives for all, as seen, for example, in the popularity of Mamdani in New York and Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico. In these harsh times, we return to the premises of The Care Manifesto and ask how we can collectively strengthen our notions and practices of care? We argue that placing care front and centre of our politics is even more urgent today than it was when the first edition of the manifesto was published six years ago. Our lives are always interdependent. It is by nurturing these ties that we cultivate a world in which every one of us can not only survive but thrive. Care must be at the heart of the state and the economy, promoting collective joy, not the satisfaction of individual desire. It should inform how we work, interact with each other, and plan our cities. It is part of how we can rebalance our relationship with the natural world. __________________________________________________________________ Speakers: Andreas Chatzidakis is Professor of Marketing and Consumer Ethics at the School of Business and Management, Royal Holloway, University of London. His works include The Moralizing Corporation; Gendering Marketing; Contemporary Issues in Marketing and Consumer Behaviour and Ethics and Morality in Consumption. Jamie Hakim is a Senior Lecturer in Media and Cultural Studies at King's College, London. He has published widely on queer cultures of embodiment, intimacy and care, including the books Work That Body and Digital Intimacies. Jo Littler is Professor of Cultural, Media and Social Analysis at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her books include The Moralizing Corporation; Left Feminisms; Against Meritocracy; Radical Consumption; and The Politics of Heritage. Catherine Rottenberg is Professor of Media, Communications and Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her books include The Rise of Neoliberal Feminism, This is Not A Feminism Textbook! Performing Americanness, and Black Harlem and the Jewish Lower East Side. She is currently working on a co-authored book entitled Feminism Against Fascism. Lynne Segal is Professor Emerita of Psychology & Gender Studies at Birkbeck, University of London.
