Walk Somers Town: People Need Routes/Roots

Guided walk through a family history in Somers Town by ex-Mayor Gary Heather and Camden Tour Guide followed by tea and chat! These guided walks by Camden Tour Guide whose family history tells the social hisotry of this area. A fundraiser for A Space for us People's Museum Somers Town, Gary Heather introduces the histories of social housing and activism in a contested London neighbourhood. The promise of these walks is exposure to the stains of dense historical layering – traces of speculators, slums, anarchists, reformers – amid scandalous changes, happening before your eyes. After the walk, we convene at the Museum to share family histories and connections. We dearly hope you may bring photos and memories. Tea and Cake avaiilable! We hope you will use these walks to reflect on the links between social housing, communities, changes in urban space today. BIOS Gary Heather Ex Mayor of Islington Gary Heather has been researching the history of his family in Somers Town for over 40 years. He is a member of the Camden History Society and a Camden Tour Guide. He grew up in Kentish Town but was always interested in what his father, Fred, told him about his own childhood and upbringing in Somers Town, and the stories about the area and other people who lived and worked there. Gary has carried out extensive research about his ancestors living in Somers Town and did a talk at the museum and has deposited an extensive set of family papers documenting this. These can be viewed in the Camden Local Studies and Archives Centre at Holborn Library, 32-38 Theobalds Road, WC1X 8PA. Some photos are on show at the museum. A Space for Us – People’s Museum Somers Town is a space to preserve local voice and the area; to celebrate an incredible ‘radical, reformers and uncommon people’s‘ histories, to record the change now, as well as to campaign and preserve local working class heritage. This community museum has been set up by local residents with the aim of playing a part in sustainable development of cities and civic society, and reducing inequality.
