Clay, Creativity & Wellbeing A talk and practical workshop with sculptor Peter Donnelly This session combines an informal presentation with a hands-on clay workshop, exploring the relationship between creativity, inspiration, mental health and wellbeing. In the first part of the session, sculptor Peter Donnelly will talk about his own work and creative practice, looking at where ideas come from, how inspiration develops, and the role creativity can play in our emotional and mental wellbeing. Drawing on examples from his own sculpture, Pete will reflect on the experience of making: the moments when ideas flow, the times when they don’t, and how creative practice can offer space for concentration, reflection and expression. The second part of the session moves from talking about creativity to experiencing it. Participants will work with clay in a relaxed, informal practical workshop, exploring the tactile and mindful qualities of the material. The emphasis is not on producing a perfect finished piece, but on slowing down, using the imagination and becoming absorbed in the physical process of making. Clay offers an immediate and instinctive way of working. It can be pushed, shaped, altered and started again, allowing ideas to develop through touch rather than through careful planning. The workshop will include simple guidance and demonstrations, but there is no expectation that participants have any previous experience of sculpture or art. The aim is simply to explore, experiment and enjoy the process. The session will include: • An illustrated presentation about Pete’s sculptural practice • Reflections on inspiration and the creative process • Discussion around creativity, mental health and wellbeing • An introduction to working with clay • Simple practical sculpting techniques • Time to experiment with form, texture and imagination • A relaxed and supportive environment with no pressure to produce a particular outcome No previous artistic experience is needed.
