Shaping the Future of Older People's Advocacy in York

Help shape the future of advocacy for York’s over 50s, with discussions on digital exclusion, financial pressures, health and care. In 2026, Older Citizens Advocacy York (OCAY) celebrates 25 years of helping people aged 50+ have their voices heard. To mark the anniversary, we are bringing together people with lived experience, local organisations, volunteers, professionals and decision-makers to ask: How should advocacy develop to meet the changing needs of people aged 50+ in York? Our ageing population, the move towards digital services, continued financial pressures and growing health and care needs are making it harder for many people to understand their rights, make informed choices and access the support they need. This forum will explore three areas: • Digital exclusion • Financial pressures and the cost of living • Rising health and care needs Each session will begin with a short presentation from an expert speaker, followed by facilitated discussions at each table. Attendees will identify the most significant challenges facing people aged 50+ and suggest practical ways in which local services, organisations and communities could respond. The priorities and ideas gathered during the event will help shape OCAY’s future work and contribute to a report shared with local, regional and national stakeholders. Speakers and contributors will be announced shortly. About OCAY Older Citizens Advocacy York provides free, independent advocacy and practical support for people aged 50+ in York. During the past year, we have supported over 520 people with issues including benefits, finances, energy, consumer rights, housing, health and complaints. Our staff and volunteers help people understand their options, express their wishes and take part in decisions affecting their lives. This event also forms part of our 25th anniversary year and our ambition to raise £25,000 to help sustain and develop advocacy in York.
