Reclamation in Hong Kong: challenges and engineering solutions

This session reviews historical developments, construction tech This presentation explores the development of Hong Kong's post-war reclamation practices, from traditional hill cutting and filling techniques to dredging and marine sand placement methods, and more recently, non-dredged reclamation approaches and deep cement mixing technologies. Through major projects, including the Hong Kong International Airport and bridge artificial island developments, attendees will gain insight into the engineering challenges, project constraints and innovative solutions that have shaped some of the region's most significant infrastructure projects. The session will also examine ground improvement techniques used in newly reclaimed areas and discuss their role in ensuring long-term stability and performance. Attendees will gain practical insights into reclamation design, construction methodologies and the lessons learned from delivering large-scale coastal infrastructure in a densely developed urban environment. Mr. Cheng Tak Sum is a construction engineering professional with 50 years of practical experience. He has held senior management roles on major Hong Kong projects, including the Central–Wan Chai Bypass connection to the Island Eastern Corridor, the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge artificial island tunnel, and reclamation, tunnel and bridge works.
