Launch of MTU Digital Media Literacy OER

Join us in person to celebrate the launch of MTU’s new Digital Media Literacy OER and help shape MTU Digital Wellbeing Policy implementation Join Us for the Launch of MTU Digital Media Literacy OER! Supported by the HEA and developed with guidance from EDMO Ireland, SATLE-funded resource projects have addressed the growing need for media literacy skills and Digital Wellbeing in higher education. On Friday, October 9th, we will officially launch our MTU Digital Media Literacy Open Educational Resource (OER). The MTU Digital Media Literacy OER is an interactive online course comprising eight units designed to help students and the wider public navigate the online information environment critically, confidently and responsibly. This OER began with a shared sense of concern and responsibility. MTU could see misinformation and disinformation doing more than simply confusing people online: they were fuelling prejudice, normalising hateful and far-right rhetoric, deepening division and contributing to real-world harm, as witnessed during the Dublin riots. We also saw how digital media can distort, minimise or push aside the human reality of war, mass suffering and genocide. These are not abstract media issues; they affect how people understand one another, whose voices are believed and whose suffering is recognised. MTU wants to respond through education. By bringing together students, educators, librarians, technologists and external experts, we created a resource that helps learners pause, question and look beyond the content placed in front of them. Its open and adaptable format allows this collective expertise to support learners far beyond MTU. At the event we will: (1) Highlight the need for such work and its impact. (2) Launch the resources available and the ongoing work on digital wellbeing within MTU. (3) Hold a round table discussion with key stakeholders to inform digital wellbeing policy implementation at MTU. We hope you can join us.
