Panorama Europa: Artist Roundtable

Join us for an artist roundtable examining the themes and artworks featured in our current exhibition Panorama Europa. Mediated by Glucksman curator Katie O'Grady and featuring Michael Canning, Claire Halpin, Eleanor McCaughey and Geraldine O’Neill this event will delve into each artist's practice and discuss contemporary use of traditional European painting motifs and techniques, considering how we can understand the present through re-examining the past. Panorama Europa presents the work of ten Irish artists who engage with traditions of European painting to explore contemporary identities and wider societal issues. The selected paintings, tapestry, sculptures and drawings reference works from Pre-Renaissance to Impressionism. The exhibition invites you to reflect on these art histories and consider how artists draw on diverse pictorial tropes to create new modes of representation. This event will last approximately 1.5 hours including time for discussion and questions with the audience. No previous knowledge is necessary. _ Michael Canning is an Irish painter whose work combines traditional painting techniques with contemporary abstraction. His practice explores perception, light and landscape often drawing on historical painting traditions while reinterpreting them in a modern context. Claire Halpin is a visual artist, curator and arts educator born and based in Dublin, Ireland. Halpin’s practice explores themes and concepts around contested territories and histories through painting, video and installation. Eleanor McCaughey is a painter based in Dublin. Her practice explores perception, atmosphere and the emotional qualities of space, often balancing figuration and abstraction. Her paintings emerge from a wider installation-based process that has included sculpture, video and sound. Geraldine O’Neill’s work spans painting and sculpture. Her practice engages with themes of memory, place and personal narrative, often combining figurative and abstract elements. O’Neil responds to the increasing confrontation and human relationship with the Anthropocene, a geological time marked by human trace embedded within layers of the Earth’s structure.
