Full description from organizer

Conversation with Nina Paim & Sera van de Water / Bikini Books (Porto) on Feminist Publishing as a Collective Practice | ENG What if, instead of copies sold or number of citations, we measured books by the bonds they help form? Bikini Books’ latest project, Fem Pub: Cold Type, Hot Politics 1960–1990, brings together fifty-nine feminist periodicals from thirty-nine different countries, introduced by forty-nine authors. Its 336 pages, filled with thousands of images, came together thanks to an extraordinary number of contributors, archivists, historians, designers, friends, institutions, and individuals who believed in the project's worth. In this talk, co-editors Nina Paim and Sera van de Water will shed light on the entire process: how the book was conceived, financed, edited, designed, produced, and now marketed and circulated, but most importantly, how they see editing as a form of gathering. – Nina Paim is a Brazilian designer, curator, editor, and publisher at Bikini Books, based in Porto, Portugal. She has co-edited and co-curated several exhibitions, events, and books, including Department of Non- Binaries (Sharjah, 2018), Design Struggles (Valiz, 2021), Etceteras: Feminist Festival of Publishing and Design (Porto, 2023), and Comunoteca (2025, Porto Design Biennale). A three-time Swiss Design Awards recipient, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of the Arts London (UAL) in 2024. – Sera van de Water is a Dutch graphic designer whose practice explores the roles, limits, and messy histories of design. She holds a BA in Graphic Design (2024) and an MA in Design in Sociopolitical Context (2025) from Sint Lucas School of Arts Antwerp. She has assisted with publishing and editing for Bikini Books and worked as an editorial designer on collaborative projects, including Studio Saudari’s The Jungle (2025) and Temptress #6: The Money Issue (2026). – Bikini Books is a feminist design publisher based in Porto, founded in 2023. They publish critical, accessible, and finely crafted nonfiction at the intersection of cultural history, journalism, and creative writing and also host regular workshops and events on design politics.
